In my community, Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, three personalities have distinguished themselves as most illustrious and outstanding amongst our great sons and daughters who have carved a niche in various fields of human endeavours. This town though small, stands out as the only town in Nigeria that could produce a two-term Governor with a two-term Minister of Federal Republic of Nigeria, within the same period. The town also boasts as the only town in Nigeria that has produced a Governor and a Minister at different periods.
First amongst these three great sons was my late Uncle, Engr. Aja Eze, who by 1963 to 1964 contested the Federal House of Representative Seat with Chief Aja Nwachukwu from Okposi a neighbouring community. He lost to Chief Nwachukwu who alter was appointed the Minister of Education.
My uncle Engr Aja Eze stands out as the first Oversea Graduate from Old Ohaozara Local Govt Area. Due to his insightful disposition was appointed Commissioner for Local Government and Rural Development under the administration of Chief Sam Mbakwe and supervised the surveying and planning of most of the key roads in the former East Central State and most of the roads in Uburu community being completed by another great son from Uburu, Engr. Dave Nwaze Umahi.
Through this ingenious son of Uburu the sitting of Obiozare as the headquarters of Ohaozara Local Government was made possible.
Late Engr. Eze was a visionary and patriotic leader, whose love towards the emancipation and development of our community was remarkable and infectious.
The second great son produced by this community that has the best salt deposit in the World, which gave succour to the Igbos during the Nigeria/Biafra war by ensuring that people didn’t suffer from diseases associated with lack of salt was Dr. Ogbonnaya Christopher Onu. A man whose nationalistic outlook marks him as one of our best products to the World. He is the major issue of this treatise. Engr. Dave Nwaze Umahi, captured this man of destiny appropriately when he described the Late Onu as a “Light to his community and Ebonyi State and a factor in the equilibrium of Uburu Community”.
The last but not the least is Engr. Dr. Dave Nwaze Umahi, the current Minister of Works, whose imprints for the modern status of Ebonyi State cannot be overemphasized. Engr. Umahi distinguished himself as one of the best Governors during his time; a workaholic and proactive leader who restored hope to Ebonyians and Nigerians in seemingly hopeless situation. He gave Ebonyi State one of the best Federal Universities in Africa and Medical institution. He singlehandedly set up few of these institutions in making Uburu one of the best towns in Nigeria.
At this point, let me address the subject of this discourse, which is to pay tribute to Dr. Ogbonnaya Christopher Onu who exited this world on 11 April 2024 and was buried on Saturday, 8th November, 2024.
THE MAN DR. OGBONNA CHRISTOPHER ONU
Ogbonnaya Onu, was born on 1st December 1951, to the family of Eze David Aba Onu in Amata, Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of then Eastern region, which later became Imo State, and then Abia State and now Ebonyi State of Nigeria.
He started his education at Izzi High School in Abakaliki, now the Ebonyi State capital, where he obtained grade one with distinction in his West African School Certificate Examination.
He also sat for the High School Examination at College of Immaculate Conception (C.I.C) Enugu, graduating as the overall best student.
Afterwards, he proceeded to the University of Lagos, and graduated with a first class degree in chemical engineering in 1976. After his graduation from University of Lagos, Onu became a teacher at St. Augustine’s Seminary in the Ezzamgbo area of Ebonyi State.
He went for his doctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Chemical Engineering in 1980.
After the completion of his doctoral studies at the University of California, he became a lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Port Harcourt, where he rose to become the pioneer head of department.
Onu died on 11th April 2024, at the age of 72.
ONU: AN ICONIC, NATIONALIST AND OUTSTANDING POLITICAL LEADER IN NIGERIA
Dr. Onu was an engineer, author, and foremost Nigerian politician who traversed the entire Nigerian political landscape, building bridges of peace, national unity, and patriotism.
The ex-minister began his political career as an aspirant for a senatorial seat in the old Imo State under the umbrella of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN).
In 1991, he contested for the position of Governor of Abia State on the platform of the National Republican Convention (NRC) and won and was sworn in as the first executive governor of Abia State on January 1992.
Since his adventure as the first civilian Governor of Abia State, Onu has remained resolute and committed to the deepening and promotion of the ideals of democracy and good governance in Nigeria. In that wise, he became the first chairman of the Conference of Nigeria elected Governors, and the National Chairman of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2010.
In 2013, Dr. Onu successfully led his party to the merger of All Nigerians Peoples Party (ANPP), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), a block of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and a block of Peoples democratic party (PDP), to form what is today known as the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Dr. Onu’s remarkable attributes of honesty, transparency and dedication to duty earned him further elevation to the office of Minister of Science and Technology and consequently a national honour of Commander of the Order of Niger (CON).
TRIBUTES
1. In his tribute, President Bola Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, described Onu as a perfect gentleman who lived selfless life and contributed immensely to the development of the country.
Tinubu noted that the late former National Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) would be remembered for the great sacrifice he made for the unity and progress of the nation.
He recalled that Onu played a significant role in the formation of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and prayed God to grant his soul eternal rest in his paradise.
2. In his tribute, former President Goodluck Jonathan, captured Onu’s legacy as one defined not by material wealth but by profound, intangible contributions. Jonathan praised Onu’s unblemished record in public service, contrasting him with politicians who amass wealth for future generations. Jonathan noted that Onu’s legacy included knowledge and wisdom preserved in the many books he authored.
With humour, Jonathan reflected on the warmth in Onu’s photos around the hall, portraying a man who approached life’s challenges with a characteristic smile. He commended Onu’s visionary contributions in the Ministry of Science and Technology, believing technology could be an alternative revenue source for Nigeria, though he lamented the “Nigeria factors” that hindered his goals.
3. TRIBUTE BY H. E. ENGR. DAVE N. UMAHI, MINISTER OF WORKS
According to Engr. D. N. Umahi erstwhile Governor of Ebonyi State and first South Easterner to be appointed Minister of Works, “Dr. Christopher Onu was a great trailblazer and a leadership light in Uburu Community and Ebonyi State, where I hail from. He was not just a mentor to me, he was a kinsman whose positive marks inspired great leadership motivations to his people. He was charming in character and charismatic in leadership. While alive, he marked a threshold in intellects, integrity, industry, and passion for excellence in all his endeavours; he was a great illustrious son of Uburu Community who made an immeasurable impact in nation-building and service to humanity.
Though he departed at the prime of his leadership and service to humanity, we shall forever cherish the values he bequeathed and the gains of the service he rendered as pioneer elected Governor of Abia State, former National Chairman of the All People’s Party (APP), first Presidential flag-bearer of APP, former Honourable Minister of Science and technology and a host of other services he rendered to his community and the nation. Our consolation and fortitude are in the assurances that he lived the true purpose of life, which is service to God and humanity.
As he makes his journey to immortality, I pray for God’s eternal mercies upon him and divine fortitude and comfort to all of us who are impacted by this irreparable loss.”
4. Francis Nwifuru Governor of Ebonyi State in his remarks said late Dr. Onu played a vital role to the development and unity of the country.
“Through every role he held, he demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the ideals of justice, development, and unity. He pursued equity and social justice till his last breath on earth. His Excellency, Dr Onu dedicated himself wholly, not just to building infrastructure while serving as Governor of Abia State from where some part of Ebonyi politically and sociologically grew, but to building people, uniting communities, and elevating the voices of those who often were unheard. In his time as governor of old Abia state, His Excellency, Dr Ogbonnaya Christopher Onu led with vision and a tireless energy. Under his guidance, our roads were modernized, schools were built, and our healthcare system saw advancements that impacted thousands of lives.
”I am pretty sure years after leaving office, successive administrations consolidated his legacies because the policies and programs of his government were all people centric —making it impossible for other administration to abandon. His vision wasn’t limited to his tenure; he dreamed of a future where this state would be a beacon of excellence and prosperity.
“Today, as we reflect on his achievements, we see that his dream is still alive and growing. As a Minister of Science and Technology – Dr Onu took that same spirit to the national level, advocating for our region and pushing forward policies that uplifted communities across the country. He was instrumental in fostering relationships that brought development and innovation to our people. He wore the mantle of leadership with dignity, advocating tirelessly for our rights, and standing as a pillar of support for those in need.
“Within our party, the All Progressives Congress, he was a chieftain who guided us with wisdom and grace. His values, his words, and his humility reminded us all of the principles that unite us.. Even in challenging times, his loyalty never wavered nor faltered—his dedication to the people was steadfast.
“He built bridges, inspired generations, and left an enduring example of what true leadership should be. It is sad that to say His Excellency Dr Ogbonnaya Christopher Onu did not live to see and enjoy his desire and quest for equity and social justice in the context of the Igbo presidency. Only God knows why.”
“Today, we bid farewell not just to a former governor, a former minister, and a party chieftain, but to a hero of our state, a friend, a mentor, and an irreplaceable part of our community in particular and our state in general.
“May his soul rest in peace, and may we continue to honor him in all that we do”.
5. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu described Dr. Onu, former Abia State governor and Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, as a leader of integrity and patriotism. Speaking at the “Night of Tributes,” Kalu highlighted Onu’s commitment to inspiring younger generations through a life of simplicity, humility, and dedication.
Referring to the event as a “Night of Unanswered Questions,” Kalu emphasized Onu’s tireless efforts to unify Nigeria. He shared a personal account of Onu’s generosity, recalling how Onu offered financial support for his campaign despite not knowing him personally. “He wasn’t the richest, but he had a heart filled with patriotism, supporting a new generation of leaders through actions, not just words,” Kalu said.
Kalu also admired Onu’s calm and humble approach to resolving conflicts, describing him as a man who inspired through character rather than wealth or authority. “Men like Dr. Onu inspire us by the wealth of their character. He was governor of my state 33 years ago, and consistency was always his watchword,” Kalu reflected.
6. To the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Ukpong, the late Onu contributed very much to the development of the country.
“Onu is not dead because he left indelible marks in the State, such as the establishment of the BCA Radio/TV, tertiary institutions, and the Abia Tower of Peace, which is the symbol of the State,” he added
7. Deputy National Organising Secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC), Nze Chidi Duru, described Dr. Onu as deliberate and focused, adding that his death was a big blow to the APC family.
“He was a gentleman, focused and very deliberate. Everything we know about life is a continuum. He has run his race and gone to his maker. We can only continue to wish for his soul to be at rest wherever he is.”
8. ABIA STATE GOVERNMENT IMMORTALISES ONU BY RENAMING THE STATE POLYTECHNIC IN HIS HONOUR
The Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, in a statement via his Facebook page on Friday, said Onu’s legacy extends beyond his political achievements.
Otti revealed that the Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, has been renamed Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, to honour the late governor’s legacy and contributions.
He wrote,“Today, we joined fellow Nigerians to bid farewell to Dr. Christopher Ogbonnaya Onu, CON, former Governor of Abia State, at his hometown in Uburu, Ebonyi State. His passing in April left a significant void in our nation. My heartfelt condolences go out to Dr Onu’s family and the people of Ebonyi State.
“Dr Onu’s legacy extends beyond his political achievements. As the first democratically elected Governor of Abia State, a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), his humility and grace were truly inspiring.
“In 1999, Dr Onu selflessly gave up his presidential ticket for the unity of Nigeria, demonstrating his deep love for the country. He lived by his convictions, always speaking the truth, regardless of the consequences.
“Despite his brief tenure as Governor of Abia, his contributions as a development-focused leader were significant. He established the Abia State Polytechnic, Aba; the Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu; and the National Ambassador newspaper. The Federal University of Agriculture, now Michael Okpara University of Agriculture (MOUAU), was also established during his tenure. These institutions, spread across the three senatorial districts of the State, highlight Dr. Onu’s strategic vision for education and economic growth.
“In honour of his contributions, we have renamed the Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, to Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba.
“Dr Onu’s story is a testament to the power of dreams and determination. We will continue to honour his memory by advancing his legacy and values with the same passion and integrity he exemplified. May his soul rest in peace.”
MY ENCOUNTERS WITH MY LATE BROTHER AND HERO
Though my path with this sage of our time was a world apart. Apart from the fact that he was born into a royal family, my birth was more like the birth of every other person unsung but lifted by God.
On four occasions our path crossed each other.
(1). The first was in 1991, when I just finished my national youth service (NYSC) in the old Gongola State. It was at this period that Dr. Onu decided to contest the gubernatorial election of the newly created Abia State and every member of our community all over the world was tasked to make contributions in making this dream realizable. Our Community members then in Yola, resolved that the money they contributed will be sent through me considering that I don’t have anything doing at that period after just finishing my NYSC.
I accepted the challenge and boarded a bus from Yola to Onitsha but sadly after Zaki Biam in Benue State, we were attacked by armed robbers who invaded our bus asking each one of us to bring out all the money in our possession.
Within the few seconds left, my mind was busy considering the implications should the money given to me is stolen. Considering that I just finished my youth service many people will then take it that I may have diverted the money and I have caused their brother to lose his election. I have no option than to jump out from the tiny window of the bus into the nearby bush with my clothes thorn.
I came back to the bus after the operation and managed myself to the village and submitted the report and funds to Elder Ekwe Odi, who was then the Coordinator of the Collection of the funds and dashed back to Yola.
(2). The second incident was when my Community youths sent for me and took me to the newly elected Governor of Abia State at his home residence recommending me to be appointed as the Director of Sports of ABIA State considering my exploits as the Director of Sports and Team Manager of the University Football Team that won the maiden edition of the MFA/PEPSI COLA FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT amongst Higher Institutions in Nigeria. Dr Onu a very strict adherent of excellence bluntly told Chief P. N. Ofor and late Onu Okoronkwo (Kosoko) that I have not acquired the experience to run the State Sports Council.
(3). The third encounter with this man of excellence was when we just finished forming APC, we came back home for me to organize my yearly event for the elders and widows of my village. I invited all key political leaders across party lines with Dr. Onu as a Special Guest. All the Guests and participants and beneficiaries were all seated but immediately Dr. Onu stepped into my compound for the event, most of the guests particularly those that were from PDP ran using different routes not to be seen in an event organized by APC Chieftains and funny enough all those that ran out during this event are the ones controlling and determining who should get what in the APC led government in Ebonyi State.
(4). My last encounter was when I was picked as the spokesperson for the defunct nPDP and was making waves risking my life in ensuring the formation of APC, Dr. Onu sent for me and pleaded that I should make sure that our seven Governors then, join the APC family and to the glory of God, we succeeded. But in the political scheme of things, where are we in the APC set up today?
DR. ONU’s LAST PUBLIC OUTING AND HIS QUEST TO CHANGE THE FORTUNES OF THIS COUNTRY AS PRESIDENT
In a bid to steer the ship of this country, the late Onu, resigned as a Minister in 2022, to join the APC presidential race of which President Bola Tinubu, eventually won the party’s ticket.
The last public outing of this great man of honour was the APC presidential primary where what he witnessed, landed him in hospital from where he never recovered until he died on 11 April 2024.
But as a trojan whose idea and vision for a greater and better Nigeria were thwarted by some undemocratic forces in Nigeria, and not minding the dangers and blank future of Nigeria, he spoke against the ill treatment the Igbos have suffered in the politics of Nigeria.
According to the Source News outlet titled, “Sad Ogbonnaya Onu Steals Show At APC Primaries, Pricks Nation’s Conscience, … Laments Injustice Against The Igbo”.
Gideon Njoku in his write up in the Source newspaper highlighted, “For most Igbo who watched and listened to the Presidential aspirants of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), as they addressed the delegates at the Presidential primaries, it was Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, the academic-turned politician who stole the show. He was the real hero of the Convention.
He pricked the conscience of the APC stakeholders and delegates. He asked where their sense of justice was. He asked where their conscience was.
In a brief but brilliant speech, he did not make a mockery of democracy by standing down for another aspirant. He did not play to the gallery. He simply reminded them of the injustices against the Igbo in the APC.
Seeing that the South-east has lost out, Onu asked them if they had done well by the zone. He asked why the Party, which in March, 2022, insisted on zoning in the choice of the National Chairman, suddenly discarded it at the Presidential primaries.
He said it was the turn of the Igbo to occupy the seat of the President.
He recalled the sacrifices he made for the APC. He recalled how he formed the party, and used his “hard-earned” money to register it.
He recalled how he discarded his presidential ticket under the All Nigerians Peoples Party (ANPP), and joined like-minds to work for the APC, and made sure the party won in 2015.
However, for all that Onu did, what he got was a low grade and poorly-funded Ministry as a Minister. And, now, at the APC presidential primaries, he is not sure of one vote because the delegates know that Dr Onu’s South-east is out of the calculation. With that, too, goes his N100m which he paid for the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms.
The Daily Post and Channels TV in their various reports about the departing speech of this man further stated, “The South West had eight years as President, eight years as Vice President; the South-South had eight years as President and Vice President; where is the justice? Where is the justice?” Dr Onu asked in anguish.
“I held the presidential ticket for one of the three parties then, but I had to let it go in order to solve a problem with the South-West, to make sure that two Olus contested for the presidency, that head or tail, one will become the President and that brought down tension within the country.
“This is what would have happened if we allowed the South-East at this time,” Onu bitterly explained.
Former Minister for Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu has said there is no justice in having the All Progressives Congress (APC) fail to zone the 2023 presidency to the South East.
“What is very very important, exceptionally important, is that we must ensure that justice is upheld,” he said in his address.
“Naturally, it should be somebody from the South-East that will replace (Buhari), and that will give the opposite South versus North and Christian versus Muslim a balance, and it will bring stability to the nation; it will strengthen Nigeria.
“The South West had eight years as president, eight years as vice president; the South South had eight years as president and vice president; where is the justice? Where is the justice?” Dr Onu asked in anguish.
He recollected how 23 years ago, he sacrificed his presidential ambition just so that two candidates from the South West could run.
This was the last public outing of this great man but will the evil and corrupt Nigerian leaders ever allow genuine democracy to thrive in this country in order to imbibe the principles that this sage sacrificed for this country?
HOW TO IMMORTALIZE OGBONNAYA ONU BY DR BEN NWOYE
According to the Ex-APC Chair, Labour leader, “The Federal Government should champion justice, equity and fairness across all ethnic groups in Nigeria as a way of immortalising the first civilian Governor of Abia State, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu
The former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Enugu State, Dr Ben Nwoye, gave the advice while reminiscing about the life and time of Dr Onu.
He recalled the sacrifices Dr Onu made ahead of the emergence of APC, noting that lack of justice in Nigeria’s polity led to Ogbonnaya Onu not emerging the presidential candidate of APC ahead of the 2023 general elections.
He said, “There was an agreement between the ANPP which the late Onu headed; President Tinubu’s ACN and the CPC of former President Muhammadu Buhari. It was an agreement and not a merger.
“If APC had zoned its presidential candidate to South East in 2023, Dr Onu would have become the party’s standard-bearer.
“Even when Buhari was elected president, Onu was projected to become the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The same way, injustice came up.
“He contested APC primaries, which Tinubu won. But his speech during the election was based on ensuring justice, not just for Ndigbo, but for the entire country.
“I think the only way to immortalise him is to adhere to what he preached.”
Similarly, former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Enugu State, Dr Fidelis Ede, said Dr Onu ought to be the rallying point of the Igbo politics, and regretted lack of political cohesion among the Igbo.
Quoting him, “Ndigbo are a tribe without political cohesion. Ndigbo have no culture of allowing those who play significant roles for the Igbo race and beyond to be honoured.
“Following the emergence of APC at the centre, Ogbonnaya Onu ought to be the Igbo bargaining leader, but he was not allowed.
“Our problem is that even when opportunities come, we lack cohesion. We don’t stand by our heroes.”
He commended the government of Abia State for renaming its state polytechnic after Dr Ogbonnaya Onu.

Other personalities who attended the burial, included governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State who was represented by his Deputy, and his Imo State counterpart, Hope Uzodimma represented by his Deputy, former Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi former Rivers State governor.
Commendation:
Special commendation must go to Senator Anyim Pius, former Secretary to Government of the Federation, and Barr. Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transport and former Rivers State governor for the elaborate burial arrangements in honour of our late brother and leader. Amaechi needs special attention because going by what he did in the course of this burial, he is a true Igbo man. At the appropriate time, the Igbos will pay you back for this great sacrifice.
The inputs of the Abia State Government in honouring this illustrious son will stand as a great testimony to all and sundry.
The Ebonyi State Government, Senator Dave Umahi, President Bola Tinubu, the 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi, National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the Governors of Anambra and Imo States, the Uburu Community and many others that space couldn’t allow me to mention here, God will surely bless you all for given our great son a befitting burial.
Conclusion:
Today, we remember and honor the life and legacy of Late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, an astute, exemplary and dedicated public servant who left an indelible mark on our country’s political history. With unwavering commitment and unshakeable conviction, Dr. Onu worked tirelessly to promote justice, equality, and prosperity for all,, a complete party man, who believed in fairness and equity.
Dr. Onu will be deeply missed, but his impact in the nation’s democratic governance and technological advancement will continue to inspire and guide Nigerians.
Dear brother Onu, wherever you are please do be at peace as you ran a great race and your service to humanity will remain indelible to the world. We are proud of what you did and the type of life you lived.
Exhibiting your honest and pure life, you continued to wear white dresses in all your public life and God will not ignore your services to humanity and will ensure eternal rest for your soul.
It is sad and unfortunate how you left us but I don’t know if you will survive what our APC is causing Nigeria and Nigerians today. People are dying in droves, those of us living can’t even boast of one single decent meal.
You were aware of the effects of insecurity when you were here but these days you can’t even step out from your house without praying seriously.
The country is in a total mess and the Government is totally confused on what to do. Our present government is now nicknamed T-Pain ensuring that Nigerians are in pain on daily basis that was not why we risked our lives for the formation of APC but that is our present plight.
Most Nigerians that have cars have parked their cars because of high cost of fuel as we are now use to trekking.
Please do remind Jesus Christ to beg God to come to our aid if not we all may be consumed.
May you continue to rest peacefully until we join you not to depart from each other anymore
Good-bye my brother and remain blessed ever.
Your legacy lives on. Rest in peace, Sir!
