One person was reportedly killed, while several othes were injured and six children of former Secretary to Taraba State Government, Gebon Kataps, alongside their police escort and driver were abducted during an operation by hoodlums in Jamtari village, Gashaka Local Government Area of Taraba state.
The state police Public Relations Officer, Usman Abdullahi, who confirmed the development said that the incident happened on Wednesday.
According to the PPRO, the family members of the former SSG were on their way back to Jalingo from Gembu after the yuletide break when they ran into the gunmen.
He said that the hoodlums went away with his children after they killed a villager and injured some persons including the police officer that was escorting the family.
Abdullahi, however assured that the police were on the trail of the kidnappers and are working hard to ensure the safe return of the victims.
The chairman of Gashaka local government area, Paul Dogoh, also confirmed the incident, saying he was aware that gunmen operated in the area on Wednesday afternoon.
He said he will convene a security meeting to appraise the security situation especially in the area under contention and ensure that the victims are rescued and the criminals apprehended and dealt with.
