The Federal Government’s proposed N70,000 transport support to Nigeria workers has been condemned by the South-South Youths Initiative (SSYI).
In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Imeabe Saviour Oscar, the group described it as a mockery of Nigerians hardship.
“We receive the news of the proposal with utter dismay.
“While we acknowledge that any form of support is welcome, we strongly condemn this approach because it lacks a holistic overview of the excruciating hardship that all Nigerians are currently passing through. The hardship is general, therefore the solution must be general.
“Our questions are simple:
“What about the ordinary Nigerians – the farmers, traders, artisans, unemployed youths, and market women who are not on the government payroll? Who will take care of their transport and daily affairs?
“Is the current hardship only about transportation?
The economic hardship Nigerians face today goes far beyond transport. Nigerians are battling hyper-inflation, high cost of food, unaffordable healthcare, high electricity tariffs, and collapsed small businesses. Giving transport support to only civil servants while leaving over 200 million Nigerians to their fate is discriminatory, insensitive and unacceptable”, the statement read.
It called on the Federal Government to come up with a holistic, inclusive economic recovery plan that will cushion the effects of its policies on all Nigerians, not a selected few.
