Tragedy struck on Friday night in the Eleme axis of the East West road in Rivers state, as an unspecified number of persons were feared dead following a petrol tanker explosion.
It was gathered that some of the dead bodies were burnt beyond recognition, while over 20 vehicles, including the exploded tanker, were also burnt.
It was also gathered that the explosion occurred at about 9:45pm adjacent to the Indorama Petrochemical Company located along the Akpojo-Onne axis of the East-West Road after the truck had a collision with another vehicle that may have ignited the fire.
A resident in the area, said he heard a deafening sound twice from his residence.
“The sound came from the Petro-Chemical company area. So when I came out, I saw a thick smoke with fire from a distance.”
