Activities in some sectors were grounded on Tuesday as the two-day nationwide warning strike by Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) commenced in Bayelsa and Rivers states .
Our correspondents reports that banks and schools in the two states shut down in compliance with the strike.
Our correspondent who monitored some banks along Aba road, Choba, Trans Amad and GRA axis of Port Harcourt in Rivers state, observed low activities in banking halls although most ATMs were functioning and dispensing cash.
In Bayelsa, the situation was not different as here was also partial compliance in the banking sector as some banks opened their gates to customers.
Our correspondent who went round the state, observed that public schools were shut while private schools were in session across Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital.
It would be recalled that the NLC had last Friday declared two-day warning strike over current hardship caused by the removal of petrol subsidy.
Minister of Labour, Simon Lalong, had called for a meeting to resolve issues raised by the union, but while the Trade Union Congress (TUC) attended the meeting, NLC shunned it and directed affiliate unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees, the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, among others stakeholders in the aviation sector to join the strike.
The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institution Employees (NUBIFIE) also directed bank staff to stay off duties for the next two days.
