A viral video of another House of Representatives member assaulting a woman on the road has stirred up public discourse among netizens in the social media.
In the video, the member could be heard saying to the woman, ‘Madam, I am going to injure you”,
While some netizens condemned the lawmaker’s action, others believed the woman was at fault.
Some of the discourse are captured below;
~ Peacemaker: “But did she try to film him?
~Aboki: The woman talk too much. The insults were unnecessary
~Peacemaker: Whatever the problem was, she wouldn’t even allow the man to explain himself to those he was talking with. She kept shouting and interjecting. And then she tried to film him with her phone…. without his consent!! She overdid it.
~Aboki: Thank you, you got my point. E be like to be senator of hor for naija now na big sin. Woman was overbearing.
~wyngatee: What an explanation. Clap for yourself.
Olufemi Adegbulugbe; The Senator or HOR member released the first volley of verbal assaults by saying “Shut your mouth” followed by “You are Stupid” and the woman responded by saying “Don’t tell me that, you are foolish”.
What happened to “Silence”.
The HoR member is expected to maintain dignified silence.
The HoR member took a bait and fell into a trap of public resentment.
~wyngatee: People are angry. Walk away in such situations. Supposing he was mobbed, impossible?
Supposing it was his wife becoming overbearing according to you, what do you do, you fight?
~Peacemaker : Whatever happened, every man has a right to be heard. You people keep supporting these bad habits and then these people go abroad and run foul of the law. You do not have the right to take another person’s picture or make a video of another person without the person’s consent. This was how that girl went to Dubai and did a video and took pictures of people without their consent and went to jail for it. She only found out later that it was against Emirati law to do that. She was jailed for a year. And then people were blaming the government for not going to her aid. The UAE simply told us she broke the law!!
When people do these things and those who know try to tell them, we begin to make snide remarks.
-Peacemaker: Are they the only ones that are angry?? Have we not seen angry lawmakers, too??!! Is the lawmaker that was suspended for getting angry with Tinubu, not a Nigerian, too? Why can’t that lady walk away???
Is anger any justification at all??? Do you think I am not angry too??? You think Mr. Ikwechegh was not angry too when he slapped the Bolt driver??? Everyone is angry, and everyone should learn to walk away from everyone cos everyone is angry! Or lawmakers have not right to be angry?? We are all Nigerians.
~Olufemi Adegbulugbe: It will be wrong to go to a private house and make a video.
It will be wrong to make a video on a private property. But we have what is called public space and public officers. It is not an offence to take a video of President Joe Biden in Capitol Hill. I believe this incident occurred in public space and it was the recording of a scene. If the Senator was seated in a restaurant having lunch and you go video him without his consent, that would be wrong. However, public or private space, if anyone objects to a video, i think that right should be respected except in the case of evidence gathering.
~Peacemaker: This was how this girl got jailed for 1 year in Dubai. She did what she used to do in Nigeria – bring out phone and start recording. She ended up in jail
~Aboki: I hope you will feel comfortable when someone start recording you.?
~wyngatee; Between the woman and the lawmaker, who has more to loose in situations like these. Public figure no be for mouth.
~Aboki: Public officials are human being too.
Olufemi Adegbulugbe: UAE law is not Nigeria Law.
UAE law is also not the global standard. In America or Canada, this lady will not have been jailed. Every country has different laws. Focus on our own laws in Nigeria. We should not be promoting copy and paste laws. Bottom line, when you are in Rome, behave like a Roman. Exporting UAE laws to Nigeria makes no sense to me.
~Okachikwu Dibia: Shouldn’t that woman know that she shouldn’t shout at the man? That is provocative please
~Temple Nnedum, “What is wrong with these lawless idiots calling themselves House of Reps Members?! Maybe they have a secret place in the National Assembly where they go to smoke ganja. These are the attitudes that will make people to start begging the military to take over the government. They don’t know the problems they’re cooking for themselves.
“This one again is even worse than the former. Attempting to beat up a woman? Somebody’s wife?
“Honestly this their looting and embezzling too much money is making them to be crazy. They fail to know that Nigerians are not happy with them.
~Usman SB Musa said, Shame on you. I’m highly disappointed !
~Istiac group, described the action as wicked and nonsensical, stating, “How on earth would a set of leaders of a nation choose to destroy their nation without any iota of consequence of their actions”.
It would be recalled that Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, representing Abia north and South Federal constituency in the House of Representatives, allegedly assaulted a bolt driver, which had been under intense public criticism, recently.
