Sporadic gunshots rented the now demolished Slaughter Market, in Trans Amadi area of Port Harcourt, Thursday, during a violent clash between a team of Policemen attached to the Rivers State taskforce on illegal Street Trading and traders.
Metro Network News gathered that the taskforce officials had gone to clear the road of street traders along the old Slaughter Market and in course of their operation burned down kiosks, umbrellas, and wooden sticks used to set up stalls in the area.
This, according to eyewitnesses, irked the traders who attacked them with sticks and other dangerous weapons.
“A policeman and five taskforce officials were wounded while Scores of traders sustained varying degrees of injuries”, the eyewitnesses said.
All attempts to speak with the Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers state Command,Nnamdi Omoni, proved abortive.
