Eight tenants have been apprehended for disposing human excreta into a gutter in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said, ” The tenants were apprehended for discharging excreta into the gutter after their neighbour who was worried about their attitude and the fact that it poses severe hazard for public health, reported the matter to the Police.
”I learnt that they were later handed over to the Rivers state sanitation authority for prosecution. Each of them were said to have paid a sum of N20,000 penalty fee. They were also said to have been set free after a stern warning to go and do the right thing before Tuesday or face re-arrest.
”Furthermore, I learnt that their septic tank/soakaway pit is filled up. Anytime their water closets are flushed, the solids go through a plumbing pipe from the compound into the gutter”, the resident added.
