Nigerians who ran away from war torn Ukraine through Polish corridors appear to have preferred their refugees status than returning to Nigeria.
In an interview with NTA, which was monitored by Metronetworknews, today, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Poland, Major General Christian Ugwu, said that Nigerians who escaped to Poland and were kept in the hotel pending evacuating them to Nigeria vanished from their hotel rooms when he addressed and told them about the plans to evacuate them to Nigeria.
According to the Ambassador, much to his chagrin, the Nigerians in the hotels could not remain, inspite of processing their documents for onward evacuation to Nigeria.
He disclosed that many were relunctant to heed to advice to leave Ukraine and come back home.
He, however, said they have been able to evacuate almost two hundred people from Warsaw to Nigeria.
“We have been able to evacuate almost 200 people this morning from Warsaw to Nigeria. The Federal government has tried so much for sending air craft to airlift the students that are comig from Ukraine. Many of them are here in Poland.
“We have to counsel them alot because many of them didn’t want to come back to Nigeria. We encouraged them that it is better to utilize the offer made to them by the federal government . The federal government made provision to accomodate them in the hotels. We have almost 400 of them but when we told them that they will be airlifted back to Nigeria, many of them vanished. So, this morning, we had 178 0f them airlifted”, he said.
Some pundits attributed the action by those Nigerians to the situation in the country where insecurity, hyper inflation and unemployment have bedeviled it.
They likened the situation as war torn Ukraine with hope could be better than the Nigerian situation where efforts are not made to address the challenges.
