Unknown gunmen have reportedly attacked the Ohaukwu Divisional Police Headquarters in Ebonyi State, killing a police officer and razing down the police station on Sunday night.
The Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP, Loveth Odah, confirmed the attack.
According to her, at about 23hrs, yet-to-be-identified gunmen came to Ohaukwu Divisional Police Headquarters to attack the men and officers on duty and they were repelled, in the process one police officer, a Sergeant paid the supreme price”
She added that the gunmen did not only engage the officers in a gun duel but also threw a petrol bomb into the station which caused the explosion.
“They threw a petrol bomb into the station and unfortunately, it got one of the patrol vehicles and exhibit vehicle parked at the place.”
She said the commissioner of police had visited the station for on-the-spot assessment of the area and met with the community leaders.
“This is the first time we are experiencing such a thing and the non-state actors being the vigilantes and all the security outfits are of great assistance to the police. It is a very surprising thing to us, we didn’t expect any attack”, she stated.
Metronetworknews gathered that the attack at the station has created fear and panic among the residents of the community who can no longer go about their businesses.
According to a resident who spoke on anonymity said “Ezzamgbo community in Ohaukwu is a very peaceful community where both the indigenes and non-indigenes co-exist without fear or panic over the years but this unexpected attack at the station has created fear and panic among the residents of the community who can no longer go about their businesses as before”.
