Unknown gunmen have reportedly attacked a police checkpoint at the Diobu area of Port Harcourt, killing two inspectors and carting away with one AK-47 rifle on Tuesday night.
The officers were said to have been killed while on stop and search duty as at the time of the incident.
A senior police officer on incident duty for the night confirmed on anonymity that the incident took place at about 11:45 p.m.
According to her, the officers were on stop and search operation when the assailants numbering about five in a black Toyota Corolla vehicle, tried to escape on sighting the police but when it was not possible, they opened fire on the policemen, killing two at spot while others escaped into a nearby spot for safety.
She revealed that the escaped officers engaged the gunmen on a gun duel until they abandoned their vehicle and made away with 1 AK 47 riffle belonging to one of the officers.
Confirming the incident to news men on Wednesday, the state Public Relation Officer, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, revealed that one AK 47, riffle belonging to one of the officers was carted away by the assailants.
He said that the hoodlums abandoned the vehicle used for the operation and assured the residents of the state to remains calm while investigation into incidents is ongoing.
