Guinean Soldiers on Sunday announced the overthrow of the government of Alpha Condé, promising to change the political makeup of the West African country.
In a television broadcast which featured nine unnamed soldiers, several draped in the red, gold and green national flag, who said they had taken over because of rampant corruption, mismanagement and poverty, calling themselves the National Committee for Reconciliation and Development, the soldiers also announced a nationwide curfew “until further notice”, saying they would convene President Alpha Conde’s cabinet ministers and other senior politicians at 11am (11:00 GMT) on Monday.
The commandos warned that “Any refusal to attend will be considered a rebellion,”
They added that, “The country’s governors and other top administrators will be replaced by the military”.
They further said, “We have decided, after having taken the president, to dissolve the constitution and shut Guinea’s land and air borders for a week”.
In a video, the coupists showed the 83-year-old President Conde sitting on a sofa surrounded by troops with rifles.
Several reports has it that the coup was led by an elite unit headed by a former French legionnaire, Lt Col Mamady Doumbouya.
