Gunmen suspected to be cultists have reportedly shot dead a 500-level student and three other students, who sustained various degrees of injury inside the campus of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
It was learnt that the incident happened on Friday evening when the gunmen stormed the Anatomy Department back gate to kill their target before they proceeded to Physical Science and Laboratory Department.
It was gathered that the deceased student was shot at a close range in his car while the three others were shot while they were trying to escape.
According to sources, the shooting may not be unconnected with renewed cult war between rival cult groups in the institution that began in Ekiadolor area, a suburb of the school, some days ago during which about three persons were allegedly killed.
The cult clash, it was learnt, later spread to the Ugbowo campus of the institution.
A video of the incident shared online shows a red car with bullet holes, from which the body of a man was removed and taken to the back of a pick-up van, as students gathered at the scene and stared in shock.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, said he was yet to be informed about the incident.
“For now I am yet to be briefed of such incident. When I get the brief, I will be able to give proper information about that, but for now no information,” he said.
