The management of University of Port Harcourt has provided special intervention bus to cushion the effects of transportation on both students and staff of the institution.
Public Relations Officer of the University, Dr. Sam Kpenu who confirmed this development said the intervention was an initiative of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill to assist those who are affected by the recent increase in public transport, following the fuel subsidy removal.
Kpenu who further noted the intervention was not recent, added that the Intervention bus which has been in bad condition was kept at the Vice Chancellor’s lodge for some time but, has been repaired and put in good condition.
According to him, the Special intervention coaster bus was provided to the University as a Need, during the administration of the then 7th Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ajienka and those who boarded the vehicle, at the time paid 20 naira.
Meanwhile, Director of Transportation at the University of Port Harcourt Students’ Union Government, Ologi Imara who commended the initiative by the Management, said the intervention bus will be out in the morning, every weekdays.
“The vehicle will be out every morning by 8 ‘O’clock, we are looking 3-4 times. But, we decided to do a test run on Friday.” he said.
“The bus will charge 50 naira per trip, from Delta to Abuja Park Campus for now. The intervention bus has come to stay so relax and enjoy it.” he added
Our correspondents however reports that It is likely that shuttle drivers who ply within the Delta to Abuja Park route and charge 100 naira will be out of business during the time the coaster bus will convey the students and staff.
