The Leadership of the National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) Worldwide has denied endorsing Senator Magnus Abe of the Social Democratic party(SDP) for the March 11 governorship race in the state.
This was contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt and signed by Comr. Miller Felicia Ibiapu-owuma,Secretary General, NURSS NATIONAL, Comr. Chimenem Sunday Wali, Vice President, NURSS NATIONAL , Comr. Iyokweinsimama J. Josiah, Financial Secretary, NURSS NATIONAL ,Comr. Nnah Harmony ,Public Relations Officer, NURSS NATIONAL,Comr. Onyaben Emmanuel,Vice President West NURSS NAT’L ,Comr. Prebo Princewill, Vice President North NURSS NAT’L and Comr. Agbalafagha Jumbo, Vice President East, NURSS NAT’L.
The statement read, “The Leadership of the National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) Worldwide received with great shock, the purported endorsement of Sen. Magnus Abe, the Gubernatorial Candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) by our Union. More Saddening is the fact that it was done by the National President Comr. Precious Monmon.
“It’s quite pathetic that the President will go this length to ridicule the union as he has been known to take unilateral decision on behalf of the union without consulting the leadership.
“We have not in anyway, any place, or any day, discuss the endorsement of any candidate for any position from Presidency down to the State Constituencies let alone endorsing Sen. Magnus Abe.
“The general public should be informed that if NURSS as a Union wants to do any endorsement, the Executives, Regional bloc leaderships and Local Government Students bodies will Be duly consulted and the endorsement be done in their presence and in a Rivers State owned school and not in an event center.
“We wondered the impromptu summit that was organized in two days without prior discussions and consolidations by the leadership not knowing the whole charade has been bankrolled by a particular candidate. Nobody is telling the President not to support the Senator as both of them are from the same LGA, and probably his major benefactor, but he cannot do so in the name of NURSS.
“We maintain that any party that we shall be endorsing their candidate must be scrutinized, and we’d know what the party has done in the Educational Sector of Rivers State.
“We call on the Senate Arm of the Union to swiftly investigate this nefarious act to avoid disunity in our Union.
“At this juncture, we are calling on the general public to disregard the charade done today by the Comr. Precious Monmon as he acted as himself not on behalf of the Union”.
