The Chairman of Akuku Toru Local Government Area of Rivers state,Hon. Aboiyaa Bob-Fubara, has dismissed insinuations that he deliberately denied the people of the area steady electricity supply.
Rumour mills had hinted that the council boss was acting on an order from his godfather to drastically reduce electricity supply in the LGA.
According to them, the unnamed godfather told the coucil boss that he didn’t install him as the LGA chairman to supply light to the people and that he was wasting money that he should be making available to political stakeholders to share on electricity supply.
They added that to save his job, the council chairman obeyed the godfather even though he had promised 24 hours electricity supply during his electioneering campaigns.
They disclosed that the usual 6pm to 8am supply didn’t come in the last four days of January and that when it came, it was reduced from 6pm to 4am, then further reduced from 7pm to 1:30am.
However, in his reaction, the chairman through his chief press secretary, Soibi Oruwari, described the insinuations as false, misleading and irresponsible, stating that such claims exist only in the realm of rumour and conjecture.
He said that the provision of improved electricity supply formed one of the core and non-negotiable electoral promises made by him to the people and this commitment remains unchanged.
“Since the inception of the current administration, deliberate and conscious efforts have been made to enhance power supply across Abonnema and its surrounding communities.
“Residents and indigenes will readily attest that the 2025 yuletide season witnessed a remarkably stable and improved electricity supply, a development that attracted widespread commendation from across the Local Government Area. This positive record remains evident.
“It is clear that these allegations emanate from individuals and interests bent on discrediting the visible achievements of the current administration.
“While it is acknowledged that epileptic power supply is a nationwide challenge, affecting Nigeria, Rivers State, and Akuku-Toru Local Government Area alike, the present administration has not relented in its efforts to mitigate the impact on residents”, he said.
