Some netizens have frowned at President Bola Tinubu’s 100,000 dollars reward to the Super Falcons.
The President had awarded each player with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), $100,000 cash (₦153 million), and three-bedroom apartments, following their victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
In addition to the players, the 11-member technical crew also received $50,000 each.
Reacting to the development on their facebook pages, the netizens, described it as a misplaced priority.
They claimed that the rewards were excessive against the fact that retired police men and women were given 2 million naira after serving the nation for 35 years.
In his post on facebook, Uche Adiele said, “While it’s good to honour those WAFCON Champions, a $100k gift is a misplaced priority, indicative of the wastefulness of the ‘leader’ of a hugely indebted nation”.
In his own post, Tope Adeosun, said, “Giving Falcons $100k each is wastage. A National Honour and a House is enough. I know a Police officer that got kidnapped 8 years ago during duty. His family were helpless, abandoned and thrown out of the barracks 5 years ago”.
On his part, Senator Dino Melaye, said, “I’m not against rewarding our super falcons but, how do we describe a nation that gives it retired police men and women 2 million naira after serving it for 35 years and rewards footballers 160 million naira for a 90 minutes game?
However, In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Onanuga took a swipe at critics, who claimed the rewards were excessive.
He drew a comparison with the ₦150 million grand prize offered to the winner of the Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality show.
He wrote, “When you remember that Multichoice, the organiser of the BBNaija reality show, is offering the winner ₦150 million grand prize, you wonder why some Nigerians are unappreciative of President Tinubu’s rewards to the Super Falcons”.
