A reporter with Megalectrics Ltd, Mr. Allwell Ene was on Monday allegedly brutalized by a group of over 15 men while carrying out a follow-up investigation on a complaint he received during a live segment on Classic FM over the weekend.
Ene was said to have gone to verify claims by a concerned caller who had alerted the station about ongoing cases of harassment, phone snatching, and illegal attacks in the Garrison area of Port Harcourt.
It was gathered that the journalist was surrounded, physically assaulted, and forcefully stripped of his belongings, including his phone and work equipment on arrival at the scene around 8:19 a.m.
It was also gathered that his attackers allegedly tampered with his device, wiping out critical information before making away with cash and other valuables.
Sources claim Mr. Ene was dragged toward the PHED building in the area in a humiliating and distressing scene, with bystanders reportedly failing to intervene as the attack unfolded in broad daylight.
A source said help only came when a colleague passing by noticed the chaos and immediately raised the alarm and called the radio station manager who swiftly responded and arrived at the scene alongside a nearby police patrol team.
Mr. Ene who sustained injuries from the assault was reportedly rushed to a private clinic, where he is receiving medical attention.
The incident has since triggered outrage among the public, with many questioning how such a brazen attack could happen without immediate intervention — and what it means for the safety of journalists on duty.
