A heavy rainfall has left several houses, streets, schools and churches submerged in flood water at Eliowhani town in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.
The heavy downpour which started on Monday and lasted till Tuesday, forced many families to remain on their feet all night as water ravaged their homes.
Personal belongings could be seen floating on flood water following the deluge while some residents could also be seen hurriedly packing their belongings and moving to safe areas.
In an interview with our reporter, a victim who simply identified herself as Chidinma said that she stood all night, adding that a snake was found in her apartment.
Another victim, Mrs Faith Ifeanyi Iwueze, attributed the flooding to blocked canal in the area.
She said that the blocked canal prevented the free flow of the rain water, leading to many homes, schools and churches being covered with water.
She called on the government to tackle the issue by clearing the blocked canal in order to prevent further devastation.
” Flood water from the heavy downpour took over our houses. It started yesterday and continued today. I saw water coming from the canal over there. I guess it is blocked. As you can see, the down part of that storey building is covered with water. The school and churches over there are also covered with water”, she said.
