The Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Sununu has disclosed that the federal government will soon announce a website for students loan application.
The Minister made the disclosure when he appeared on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Good Morning Nigeria programme on Wednesday.
”Just about two days ago, Mr. President unveiled the students loan scheme and the website will soon be announced, where students can go and apply with all their necessary documents”, he revealed.
Recall that on June 12, 2023, President Bola Tinubu signed the Student Loan Bill into law. The law enables indigent students to access loans at interest-free rates.
Similarly, on Monday January 22, 2024, the president directed the management of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund to extend the loans to Nigerian students interested in skill-development programmes.
The President gave the directive following a briefing by Mr. Akintunde Sawyer, NELFUND’s Executive Secretary, outlining preparations for the upcoming programme launch later this month.
He emphasised the need for equity and inclusivity in the management of the programme.
“No matter how economically challenged you are, accredited and qualified students will and must have access to this loan to advance their education in higher institutions.
“This is not an exclusive programme. It is catering to all of our young people. Young Nigerians are gifted in different areas.
“This is not only for those who want to be doctors, lawyers, and accountants. It is also for those who aspire to use their skilled and trained hands to build our nation.
“In accordance with this, I have instructed NELFUND to explore all opportunities to inculcate skill-development programmes because not everybody wants to go through a full university education,” he said.
