Lagos state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Akin Abayomi has warned Nigerians particularly Lagosians who have not been vaccinated that they are likely to get infected.
Speaking in an interview with newsmen, the commissioner said those who have not been inoculated with a vaccine are responsible for the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant.
He also said reports reaching him indicated that none of the new cases in Lagos state had a history that they were vaccinated.
” Right now, what we have observed is that the new cases that are happening in Lagos, of all the new cases we’ve admitted, none of them give us a history that they were vaccinated. This is coming from our clinical team lead. It is an indication that certainly, the people that are admitted now have not been vaccinated. Also, it is an indication that those who have not been vaccinated are the ones catching the virus”, he pointed out.
The commissioner advised Lagosians to take the jab, pointing out that it was necessary to do so.
” If you look at the international literature, it clearly demonstrates that while it may not stop you from catching the virus, it stops you from getting very sick and die”.
He noted that leaders of the country have been taking the jab to demonstrate that they have confidence in the vaccines.
” The Deputy Governor, Governor, Mr. President and all members of cabinet have been vaccinated. We’re demonstrating that we’ve confidence in the vaccine”.
The commissioner reiterated the readiness of the state government to ensure effective deployment of the vaccine consignments that they get from the federal government.
” As we continue to increase our activities around acquiring the vaccines , as soon as they come, we will deploy them. So, as you know in Lagos, we’re very quick to deploy all the vaccine consignments that we get from the federal government. I am happy to say all were distributed and we saw very few effects”, he stated.
According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control(NCDC) records, Lagos state is at the top of the states with new cases of COVID-19 as at August 16,2021.
