In a statement made available to media houses, Adegbulugbe opined that instead of purchase, the government would have requested the Chinese company to setup pre paid meters assembly plant in Nigeria.
He regretted that the Tinubu-led administration failed to take advantage of the huge demand for prepaid meters, stressing that assembling the metres in Nigeria due to huge demand for it would have been a better option, describing the development as missed window of opportunity.
”We expected Government to seek alternative solutions for the benefit of Nigeria.
”We expected a responsible Government to request the Chinese company to setup an assembly plant in Nigeria for the assembly of pre paid meters.
”1.4 million prepaid meters is a huge market and perhaps about 10 years sale inventory for this Chinese company. The assembly of prepaid meters in Nigeria would generate jobs as well as revenue in the form of taxes to Government”, he stated.
Adegbulugbe who is the Secretary General, Federalist Majority, pointed out that several components of the meters such as the plastic casing, the bolt and nuts are readily available in Nigeria and can be manufactured from local materials.
He noted that the use of these local materials in the assembly of the meters will bring down the unit cost of prepaid meters compared to wholesale imports.
”All what we need to import is the electronic boards of the prepaid meters. All other components can be sourced in Nigeria. The internal wires and cables are available from kabelmetal and Nigerchin at better quality.
”Now the Chinese company will use this opportunity to employ more Chinese, expand production lines to fulfil the order of 1.4 million prepaid meters, at the expense of rising unemployment in Nigeria.
”We are not even talking about the pressure and impact of this 1.4 million prepaid meter MoU on the Naira and foreign exchange reserves.
”I want to make clear that an MoU is not necessarily a legally binding document.
”There is room for Government to make a rethink and do the needful by putting the interest of Nigeria above the interest of China.
”What about funding research and mandating 2-3 select Universities to design electronic boards for pre paid meters.
”We have very young and smart electronic engineers roaming the streets of Nigeria that can design a functional prepaid meter.
”We have many Nigerians in Alaba Market, Aba, Owerri and Yaba that can deliver made in Nigeria prepaid meters with the right support.
”It is shameful that our President travelled to China to engage in transactional and mercantile container economics. It is a national shame!”, he said.
