President Buhari has expressed his gratitude for Nigeria’s removal off a blacklist of countries breaching religious freedom by the United States of America.
The President stated this at the State House in Abuja while receiving US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.
President Buhari equally appreciated the United States of America for allowing Nigeria to procure military hardware to fight terrorism in the country, and for the training given to Nigerian military.
He stated that education is a top priority in the country because of its ideals, which would steer people toward a healthy lifestyle.
On the issue of democracy, President Buhari said Nigeria has adopted the American model, “hook, line, and sinker, with its term limits, stressing that those who have attempted to breach it were disappointed..
President Buhari said, “Nigeria and her neighbors have been living with the impact of climate change for a while, which has seen the Lake Chad shrink drastically from its original size, and affected the livelihood of about 30 million people in the Lake Chad Basin countries”.
He emphasized that the situation is to blame for the movement of young people who attempt to emigrate to Europe by crossing the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean.
Mr Blinken praised President Buhari for his commitment to climate protection, particularly his attendance and comments at the recent COP26 climate meeting in Glasgow, Scotland.
He added that while America and Nigeria face different difficulties, security is a shared denominator, and he hoped for better collaboration.
He called the EndSARS investigative panel’s report “democracy in action,” noting that America, too, has its share of police violence and expressing hope that essential reforms would be implemented.
