Recently, President Bola Tinubu was reported to have agreed to reinstate Siminalayi Fubara as the governor of Rivers State, after several deals and agreements were reached during a closed-door meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to the report published in TheCable, the meeting marked a significant breakthrough in Tinubu’s efforts to restore political stability in Rivers State, following a prolonged power struggle between Fubara and his political godfather, Nyesom Wike.
It was disclosed that the deal came with steep conditions that considerably reduced the governor’s political leverage.
One of the deals was that Wike will allegedly be allowed to nominate all chairpersons for the 23 local government areas in Rivers State, a major concession that effectively hands grassroots political control back to the former governor.
Pundits are of the opinion that the suspended governor may have changed his mind and backed out of that deal, following his reported boycot of the council polls held on Saturday August 30, 2025.
It was gathered that Fubara and his supporters were absent on Saturday during election into the chairmanship and councillorship positions in the state.
It was learnt that the suspended Governor was not seen in Opobo Local Government Area, his hometown.
It was also learnt that Fubara had travelled to London and did not return before the scheduled election.
There are worries that the bitter quarrel between Fubara and Wike will continue.
The suspended governor is expected to be recalled to office on September 18, 2025.
All efforts to reach his chief press Secretary, Chukwudi Nelson for comments, proved abortive.
