The Labour Party has refuted reports circulating in the media that the Supreme Court has sacked Julius Abure as its National Chairman.
According to the party, the news report is false.
In a statement released on Friday, Dr. Arabambi Abayomi, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, addressed the issue, affirming that the Supreme Court ruling in question had no impact on the party’s leadership.
“What transpired in court today was clear,” Abayomi explained. “The Supreme Court struck out suits filed by Nenadi and Abure, emphasising that only political parties have the authority to determine their leadership. The court further stated that the judiciary should not interfere in the internal affairs of political parties.”
The ruling, according to the Labour Party, also extended to earlier decisions made by both the trial court and the Court of Appeal.
The Supreme Court ruled that the trial court had overstepped its jurisdiction by making pronouncements on the party’s leadership.
“The court’s message was unambiguous – political parties must follow their constitutions and the Labour Party adhered to its constitution in organising the convention that led to the election of Bar Julius Abure as National Chairman and Alhaji Farouk Umar Ibrahim as National Secretary,” Abayomi clarified.
As a result, the Labour Party leadership confirmed that Julius Abure remains the duly recognised National Chairman, with Alhaji Farouk Umar Ibrahim as the National Secretary.
The party leadership stressed that these positions are legally binding, as confirmed by the court’s ruling.
“The only legitimate national leadership of the Labour Party remains as follows: Bar Julius Abure as National Chairman and Alhaji Farouk Umar Ibrahim as National Secretary,” he added.
The Labour Party has called on its supporters and the public to disregard the misinformation circulating and to remain focused on the party’s mission and leadership.
